Using an EMT Practice Test to Prepare for the NREMT Exam

If you are pursuing a career as an emergency medical technician (EMT), you will eventually have to take and pass the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) examination and using an EMT practice test can go a long way in preparing you for successful certification. You can perform very well on this critical exam but you will need to understand the structure of the test and gain familiarity with the types of questions you will see on it. With proper preparation, you will ace the NREMT exam and be on your way to becoming an EMT. Let’s take a closer look at this test.

EMT Practice TestWhen choosing an EMT practice test, it is helpful to know how the NREMT exam is structured. The NREMT test questions are multiple choice questions with 4 possible answer choices. In order to ensure credibility of the exam, the questions are created by a group of 10-20 EMS experts who must all be in agreement that each question is consistent with current practices. These EMS experts must also agree that each question does indeed have a best possible correct answer. The NREMT exam underwent a major change in January 2007 when it switched to Computer Based Testing (CBT). This has led to a significant testing change that all test takers must be aware of, which is that questions cannot be skipped at any point in the exam. Test takers can find a PearsonVue testing centers to take the NREMT exam; PearsonVue testing centers are located throughout the country. Each question on the exam is given a point value and more difficult questions will have higher point values. This really does ensure that your score is a very accurate measure of your abilities.

Now that you understand more about the structure of the NREMPT examination, let’s turn to the content of the test. You should be very familiar with all the information covered in your EMT course materials. The EMT practice test focuses heavily on basic level material that was covered during your EMT course. The latest test plan states that six topic areas will be covered on the exam: Airway & Breathing, Cardiology, Medical, Trauma, OB/Gyn/Peds and Operations.

Anyone who is interested in becoming an EMT will have to eventually take the NREMT examination. If you are pursuing this career, you will have to take the examination. It is never too early to understand the structure of this exam and the specific content areas that are emphasized. The earlier you start and more preparation you put in, the better you will do.
